Possibilities for the name of my TV channel website:

Current fashion TV channel website names :

Fashion TV
World fashion TV
Fashion Television

All of which are very simple names that clearly mean what they suggest, however or my fashion channel website I don't really want to use a name that is so simple as i think it maybe a bit expected and mundane.

Fashion Website names:

ELLE: A word meaning she in French

VOGUE: Is a word associated with fashion, meaning something in fashion at a particular time

Style.com: Eventhough this is a rather simple name I think that it is fairly effective, because it describes exactly what it contains.

These names are also simple, yet they are all a little more inventive, so in my oppinion they make the website seem more interesting. Because they are all fairly short the names are much more memorable as than, for example a long catch phrase or name,a short name also allows the domain name and hyperlink to be shortened, thus it would cost a bit less if the website was actually up and running .

When searching for a name to see if it is available if I were actually creating this TV channel website for an actual real life channel I would have to enter my desitred domain name into an official site and see if that particualr domain name is available, then if it is available I would have to pay for it in order to secure the name as an official we address. I found a website that does exactly this :
http://promotions.names.co.uk/index_uk023c.html?PR=EG0&BID=000&LPAG=uk023c_uk023c.html?PR=EG0&BID=000&LPAG=uk023c

The best domain endings are .com and .co.uk and they are definitely the most popular, thus the most likely to be choosen, obviously there are other endings available, but if setting up a website for a TV channel for instance, I believe it is important for the ending to be a significant one. If the domain ending is not a popular one then when people type in the name of the TV channel in a search engine then they may not click on the right one or, it may take them a long time to find it, then unless they save it as a favourite, then they be put off by the fact that they have to trapse through numerous search pages to find the site.

Researching the font styles and types used :

logos:

The Vogue logo often appears different depending on what it is used for, for example the website logo is different to the logo for the magazine and the magazine logo changes colour depending on the style of the front cover. Eventhougth the colour is changed many times the font often stays the same, it is clear and simple, yet bold and always in capitals, whcih helps to make it stand out more.

Likewise to the VOGUE logo , ELLE also being a magazine as well as having a website has a font where the colour is changed for use on the frontcover of the magazine, but the font style is kept the same.

The logos for Ftv and World Fashion Tv on the other hand don't change colour or font style, probably because they do not have other parts of the buisness, such as magazines etc. Both these fonts are fairly basic and plain, with the use of a monochrome colour scheme that keeps the logo looking formal. Eventhough, perhaps these logos are more relevant, as they are specifically for fashion websites I actually prefer the logos for the fashion websites, the font looks more appleaing and I think that the way the company uses different colours makes the logo more memorable and thus effective.
Overall I think that a legable font written in capitals is the best choice as it definitely stands out much more.

Researching into colour schemes of fashion websites:

FTV: The colour scheme is just simply plain white, it is very simple, yet quite effective obviously a wise choice as the website is aimed at a both male and female.

The font is a basic clear font in a medium grey

World fashion TV: The colour scheme is of different shades of grey

The font varies from light grey to white for the main Hyperlink list

ELLE :
This colour scheme is also grey, the background is a mixture of different shapes of grey

The font is basic and is a medium grey colour
The main hyperlinks are each a different colour.
Fusica pink is used to highlight some of the hyperlinks on the homepage

I think this combination of greys and pinks works quite well together as the fusica really stands out against the grey, I also like the fact that the main hyperlinks are different coloured .

VOGUE: (TV channel)
The background is a brown/yellow ochre
The colour scheme is dark grey, light grey and white

The main hyperlink menu is medium grey and some of the hyperlinks are red and the "Subscribe Now" text at the top of the page is fusica like the font in ELLE

The Main appearance of the VOGUE website is different to the TV channel hyperlinked page, border is a very light grey and the background is white and the font depending on It's relevance is either dark grey, black or red.

From this research of four websites I have discovered that most of them have a neutral toned background, mostly different shades of grey are used which really helps to accentuate text when the font is fusica or phone-box red. The use of neutral colours ensures that the websites are kept sophisticated, formal and unisex. Then the use of coloured font, such as fusica injects a bit of fun into the design.

On each website depending on the relevance and significance of the text the size, colour and font may be different. For example the most relevant stories, or features will often be in a large font, sometimes in capitals, the colour will also differ depending on the iumportance of the

Who views the channels?

I have researched fashion channels to see what type of people view the channels in order to tell what type of people will be viewing the websites, which will also enable me to gain an insight into the general taste and content required for the website.

World Fashions target audience:

"well educated, successful and dynamic people

Opinion leaders, high earners, trend setters"

Professionals related to the world of fashion- designers, photographers, models, owners and clients of fashion boutiques"
http://www.worldfashion.tv/files/wfc_presentation.pdf

Over half of the viewers are of the 17-35 age bracket and 72% of the audience earn a high wage, 57% are men and 43% are women.

Here are some statistics that I have found on the Ftv website describing the typical viewer:

MEN (64,7%), WOMEN (35,3%)

• AGE: 21-44 YEARS (61%); 45-54 (23%); 55+ (16%)

• EDUCATION: DEGREE OR EQUIVALENT (62%); BELOW DEGREE (38%)

• WELL-OFF, TECHNOPHILES, GLOBETROTTERS, TRENDY AND AD-AWARE

• EARLY ADOPTERS, OPINION LEADERS, MODELS, FASHION STARS
AND FASHION PROFESSIONALS

• MORE AFFLUENT, OLDER AND ENJOY HIGHER EDUCATION LEVELS THAN MUSIC
CHANNEL VIEWERS

• YOUNGER THAN NEWS CHANNEL VIEWERS BUT FALL INTO A SIMILARLY HIGH
INCOME BRACKET

• YOUNGER THAN VIEWERS OF SPORTS CHANNELS BUT HAVE A HIGHER
DISPOSABLE INCOME

• WITH FTV YOU ARE ABLE TO REACH A UNIQUE TARGET GROUP AND WILL HAVE A LARGER IMPACT ON OUR YOUNG AFFLUENT VIEWERS

R E S U L T S :

From the information above I have acknowledged that more men watch the channel than women, but it must depend on the actual channel as that results from world fashion TV is much different to that of FTV, as nearly double the amount men watch this channel compared to women. World Fashion TV on the other hand is just a slight difference of men watching the channel compared to women.

Each channel has the most viewers from the age bracket of approximately ages 17-44 year old.

I have also found that the majority of viewers of each channel are affluent, therefore this means that the adverts and sponsors e.t.c. can definitely be from expensive companies, such as Chanel for instance.

S U M M A R Y
Therefore when designing my website for my fashion channel I will have to consider all these factors above. I think that even though my research has shown that more men than women watch the fashion Channels, I will make the website unisex, thus it will suitable for all audiences then. However, I am not making an actual fashion channel, I am making a website for a fashion TV channel and I have not been able to find any statistics on the gender that views the channel websites the most, therefore I am still a little uncertain as to if the gender of the viewers is dramatically different to the gender of people that mostly look at the website.

Fashion TV has been acknowledged by research to be the favourite channel of clubbers, DJ’s and sophisticated party-goers as it delivers the best of house, chill out and new age music . The channel mirrors the cutting edge music that is currently being played in the world’s most renowned clubs, this music appears on no music channels and only appears on ftv .

Deciding whether to make a 24 hour channel or a channel that is shown at select times

I have realised also that I will need to decide whether I am creating a website for a Fashion TV channel that is only on at set hours or a fashion TV channel that is on 24 hours a day like FTV .

World Fashion Channel: broadcasts 24 hours a day and therefore the website needs to include a detailed playlist, the channel also broadcasts all around the world with an estimated audience of 1.5 billion. As the channel broadcasts all over the world I would have thought that the channel would provide different playlist selections for different countries, however it does not, instead the channel just broadcasts the same programmes in the same language.

FTV: Unlike World Fashion TV does include a country selection in order to select the accurate playlist for your language.

Analysing ELLE and VOGUE TV channels

ELLE:

Trends
Fashion
Beauty
Street Style
Catwalk
People
Events
30 Seconds with

ELLE also includes Related videos
Most viewed videos
Most recent videos
(all of which are displayed dirrectly on the homepage of the channel)

VOGUE:

Exclusives
Catwalk Videos
Expert Interviews
Beauty Films
Magazine Videos

Although ELLE TV has a few more features both the channels are fairly similar in content . The ELLE features are more specified into different categories, therefore if you were looking for a particular video it will be quick and easy to locate, whereas the VOGUE TV channel is a bit broader, which means that it may take a while to locate a specific video.

Both these two TV channels differ from the original fashion channels, obviously because they are focused mostly around the content of the magazines, to make people more inclined to want to buy or subscribe to their magazine.

What to definitely include on my fashion channel website :

I have researched a range of hyperlinks (things) that are displayed on most fashion channel websites in order to decide what hyperlinks I will have to definitely use in order for my website to be realistic enough.

Programmes: A list of all the different programmes is displayed, the programmes have a brief summary underneath them along with a few photos from the programme.
http://www.worldfashion.tv/programs/

Improvement : In my own website I could make a programme list that is hyperlinked, therefore then when then programme is clicked on it would leeds you to another page with more details and extra information about the programme. I could even add more hyperlinks to the page with backstage footage and photo books from each programme.

Playlist (displaying the different time slots and what is going to played at that time). The playlist usually displays the current week and the next week, where a calendar-like chart is used for the user to select a specific day.

Both a Playlist and a Programme Information block are the two mandatory hyperlinks, there are others that are important, however they are not as necessary/vital.

Fashion TV channel websites

I have researched fashion websites as well as Fashion TV channel websites and I have found that most of the fashion websites actually include a substantial amount of the content that is found on the fashion TV channel websites.

I think it would be good to merge together some of the features of the fashion websites in with some of the features from the fashion channel websites, this would enable me to create a website that is innovative. I feel that for the website to include innovative features, or a combination of features from both fashion websites and Fashion TV channel websites will provide me with the opportunity to create a website that is slightly different from any other site. I also believe that innovation is a prime factor in making a sucessful website.

Some specific fashion websites include an actual TV channel within them, such as ELLE .co .uk and VOGUE .com, however the channels have been built around the magazine. My task on the other hand is to create a website for a TV channel, therefore I will have to base my website completely on the TV channel and build all features and aspects around the channel.
